Clinical Psychology Final Project Virginia Berry June 15, 2011 PS380 Professor Husk Kaplan University Aspergers Syndrome is one of the most common autism spectrum disorders, (Hunt amp; Marshall, 2006). There are many symptoms that are common with children with Aspergers syndrome. One symptom may be showing intense obsession with specific subject like cars, bugs or the weather. Speaking in a monotone voice or speaking fast is another symptom of Aspergerââ¬â¢s (MayoClinic, 2011). There are approximately 26 to 36 out of 10,000 school-age children that are diagnosed with Aspergerââ¬â¢s syndrome (Ehlers amp; Gillberg, 1993). Like classic autism, there is no known factor that causes Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome. Though many parents believe there isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Cognitive behavioral therapy fundamentally presumes that the way we think about events determine the way we respond (Pomerantz, 2008). A client may use CBT to help him or her stop and think about what they are doing. This can help when an individual is interrupting another or obsessing over an item. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be included in a treatment plan to achieve a more successful outcome for the child. The resistance I think I, as a therapist, would encounter in this situation would be the family. Not all families understand Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome. Parents can be confused, upset or angry that their child has Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome. Having a child with Aspergerââ¬â¢s can be overwhelming if the parent is not adequately informed on the disorder. Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome can take a toll on a family and relationships. Parents will be overwhelmed with information, some with medical bills. As a therapist, I feel as if I will be the target of many parentââ¬â¢s anger. I hope that I will able to reassure the families that living with Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome can be done with a lot of work, dedication and determination. As a therapist, I would suggest to families living with a child with Aspergerââ¬â¢s to attend family therapy and group therapy. Family therapy can give the family a safe place to discuss their feelings and concerns. Family therapy will be controlled situation where there is professional help.
